Lima, Peru day 4
My last day in Lima before flying further south to Santiago, Chile.
Just ate breakfast and did some updates on the blog.
I haven't made a plan for today. I will figure something out.
I decided to try taking a bus to the Museo Larco. The last time I tried to take a bus, I got waved off. I thought because I wanted to pay cash and instead of having a transit card.
I head out looking to get a transit card. After walking too much and getting renewed directions from too many people, I was directed to the underground transit station. Down a long ramp, down more stairs, down a hall, up a few more stairs. I found it. I ended up getting the card loaded with about $8 usd credit. Only then did I found out I couldn't get to where I wanted to go with the transit card. I needed to go back up to the street level and take a local bus, paying cash.
On my way to get a transit pass, I came across this lady selling hard boiled quail eggs. I've never had quail eggs so I bought some. They taste like hard boiled eggs, just smaller.
It's good thing a return to Lima is in my plan for this trip. I leave for Santiago, Chile tomorrow and won't have time to use it before I leave.
Back down the stairs, down the hall, ahh, there is an elevator to bypass one set of stairs. I still had to walk up the long ramp.
Going to the where I think I need to catch the bus, I walk through a park. I spot a cart selling fruit, perfect. I got a large slice of watermelon and sat on a park bench to enjoy it.
I still didn't know what bus to catch to go to the museum. I ended up taking a taxi.
I arrive at the Larco Museum already having used up my steps quota for the day. I hope they have places to sit.
This place is amazing. There are 4 components. A small theater with an introductory film, each time it plays in a different language. The visible collection which is a collection on shelves containing over 30,000 catalogued pottery pieces. The permanent collection and finally the erotic collection.
The visible collection is housed in several rooms with floor to ceiling shelved completely full of antique pottery pieces. The items are protected from mishap with glass panels.
The permanent collection is display in 1st class museum style displays. Artifacts dating back to 2000 bc to the 1500's, display in somewhat cronological order.Walking through is like walking through time.
The collection is mostly pottery, but also includes many other pieces Inwood, silver, gold, gold alloys and a few fabrics.
The erotic collection is displayed in a separate building, away from accidental viewing by kids. This collection, also mostly features antique pottery dating back to about 1 ad. Figure display not only sex in various positions, but also child birthing and nursing.
The museum buildings surround a beatiful garden and an incredible collection of plants.
After my time at the museum, I am back out the street and would really like to take the bus back. Luckily for me there was a lady on the corner, not familiar with the buses, but going to the same area I was going. She was able to ask around and find out which bus we should get on. It wasn't long before our bus arrived.
The bus took a zig zag of streets, but in the, I got off less than 2 blocks from the hostel.
It wasn't quite time for me to eat, so I went back to the hoste to recharge.
Later in the afternoon, I again went to one of the small restaurants next to the hostel for a fixed menu lunch. Tasty.
After lunch it was time to start pre scheduling my departure to Santiago, Chile in the morning.
I have arranged with the hostel for a taxi to the airport. They will pick my up at 5:30 am for my
