Santiago day 5
This will be my last day in Santiago. There are a couple places I want to visit today. I will also be going to the bus station today, just to scope it out for my trip to Valparaiso tomorrow. I think I can take the subway, almost door to door. I will probably also visit the Bellavista neighborhood, the hip neighborhood.
I started off in the morning to scope out the bus station for tomorrow morning. Checking the subway routes it looks like I can take the subway all the way.
In the subway, I boarded a green line train. After a couple stops, I realized I was going in the wrong direction. I got off at the next stop, crossed over the bridge to wait for the train going in the right direction. I never had to go outside the pay gate, so I didn't have to pay again. Now going in the right direction, I got off after a couple stops to transfer to red line train. I took the red line to the Estacion General. But this endedup being the long distance train station, the bus station was the next stop. It was only a few blocks so I walked there.
At the bus station I bought a ticket for tomorrow late morning to Valpaiso. It was only a little over $5 usd.
Outside again, I sat on a bench to figure out what to do next. I saw that I was within a bus ride of the Human Rights Museo. Something that was on my list to do. The bus stop was back in front of the train station. I tried to board the first I17 bus I saw, but I was turned away. Unlike the first buses I took here that I didn't pay, this one required payment by transit card. I asked around to see where to buy a transit card. With my sucky Spanish, I was directed back to the bus station. At the bus station I asked where to buy a transit card and was directed to the subway. Finally then I realized, I use the same Metro card for the subway and some of the buses. I have a Metro card. Back to the bus stop. The I17 bus only seems to come by every 15 minutes. The first I17 bus to come by ws blocked by other buses, so it just blew by my stop without stopping. The next one stopped, but never opened the door for me to board. Finally the next bus stopped and I was able to board.
On my way. With Google maps I am able to follow along to make sure I am headed in the right direction. I got off the bus at the museum, made my way to the entrance, just to find out the museum is closed. My bad, I know that most museums are closed on Mondays.
So I just blew a half a day with only a bus ticket to show for my troubles.
I was kinda done with buses at this point and started meandering through the centro area in the direction of the hostel.
I came across these guys playing chess in the park.By this time, I was getting a little hungry, I stopped for a snack, then headed back to the hostel for my daily siesta.
I did go out later in the day, heading to one of the major squares. I came across one street that was lined with hotdog shops. These are stand up counters and all of them had customers. I'm thinking I have to try one. I stopped at one that seemed a little busier. Always a good sign and order a hotdog and beer. It was good, but nothing exceptional.
All in all it turned out to be kinda of a nothing day. It happens sometime.
I didn't take many pictures today, but I know I took a couple, but they seemed to have disappeared. Sorry.
