Paracus, Peru - day 2

 Good Morning.

More wall art in the hostel.
I do have a plan for the day. First I will rent a bicyle for the day. I will go to the bus station for buy a ticket to go Nazca tomorrow.  I am still undecided if I will take a short flight over the lines or just see what I see of the lines from a tower overlooking a some of the lines.

Then in the opposite direction I will head to the national park just a few kilometers down the road. I am hoping there are no hills.

I picked up the bike. As planned I first road down to the bus station and bought a ticket to go to Nazca. The bus will depart at 11 am tomorrow.

I then headed out to the Reserva Nacional de Paracas. It seemed like a straight ride out to the reserve, but I have this knack for getting twisted around. I rode for about 15 minutes until I came to a piece of the road that looked very familiar, and then I saw the hostel I am staying at. I apparently made a big loop and ended up where I started.

I turned around and started out again, this time more closely following google maps. It was a longer ride than I anticipated even getting to the reserve, but I got there.

I started into the reserve with is basically a coastal desert. I didn't know how far I would get before deciding it was time to turn back. I knew I couldn't do all the loops, but I thought I would at least complete 1.

It was a gentle uphill ride for most of the time, but what really got me was bucking the wind coming off the ocean. The wind was so strong that when I parked the bike using the kick stand, the wind blew the bike down, twice.

I rode quite awhile, for me anyway, but never even made it to the first turnout before deciding to head back. The nice part about the return is the wind was at my back and it was predominately downhill. Even with turning back early, I rode about 15 miles.

I returned the bike and by then I was hungry and thristy.  I decided to go to one of the beach restaurants to take care of both of those issues.

I ended up ordering fried calamari. I haven't had any in a long time, so I was pretty happy to see it on the menu. I got a Peruvian beer to accomany my meal.

The calamari came with a small salad and fries. All it was very good.

After my meal I was ready for my daily siesta.

I went back out after my siesta to pick up a few things to snack on later in the evening and fruit for the mornings.

It was still shirt sleeve temperatures and a lot of people were stil on the beach and strolling along the beach walk.

I returned later to check out the sunset. It wasn't the most dramatic I've seen, but it was still beautiful.
